Cargo Cruising repackaged
20 November
What was once the domain of wayfaring nomads has been repackaged to meet the needs of adventure-seeking travelers, with the launch of a new range of Cargoship cruises.
While cargo cruising is available through boutique operators in the South Pacific, Sydney-based agency, The Travel Lab, has designed itineraries throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.
Travelling exclusively on cargo ships, cargo cruising is a budget-friendly way to discover some of the region’s most popular ports, as well as smaller ports which are off the beaten tourist trail.
The Travel Lab business development manager, Jacqui Burnside, said that while cruising is growing in popularity, not everyone is inspired by the current choices available on traditional cruise ships.
“Cargo ships offer a unique style of adventure, following the cargo routes, which opens a whole new world of budget cruising and adventure.
The experience is distinctly boutique with a maximum of 12 passengers travelling in the former officer’s quarters boasting ensuite facilities with a separate sitting area.
“There are none of the usual ‘cruise fanfares, such as bands playing in the bar, or multiple sittings of evening meals. Instead, travellers enjoy an intimate experience at sea with a chance to share some tales with the crew around the dining table, or during a visit the bridge to chat with the captain.
The experience allows travelers to immerse in the journey, as well as the hustle and bustle of busy port towns and cities, as cargo is loaded and unloaded.
Among the ports visited, which are not typically frequented by traditional cruise ships are the European gem - Ravenna, Italy. This atmospheric city is littered with UNESCO World Heritage sites, and is relatively insulated from the tourism hype of larger port cities.
“Other highlights are Koper, Slovenia where travellers can admire Venetian-style architecture without the crowds; and Flushing in the Netherlands, which is a great stopping-off point to visit the nearby city of Bruges,” said Burnside.
The Belgian port of Antwerp is also popular among visitors.
The Travel Lab has launched its Cargo Cruising program with three itineraries.
The 15-day, Isreal and the Adriatic voyage departs Monfalcone, Italy with visits to Greece, Israel, Turkey and Slovenia, and provides a detailed insight into the culture and people of the Adriatic. Prices start from A$1635 per person twin share.
